We kick off May, which is both Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and Older Americans Month, with a reminder to ensure we are best meeting the needs of AAPI older adults. Although less prominent in the headlines, Asian Americans continue to experience hate speech and violence in communities across the country, including assaults and shootings in New York this past week. This risk of violence underscores how important it is for AAPI older adults to have access to in-language resources as well as culturally competent and trauma-informed services so they will be able to access benefits and navigate the system smoothly. It also speaks to the work we all must do to overturn the structural racism, xenophobia, and sexism underlying this violence. We have updated a list we compiled last year with resources from Justice in Aging, the National Center on Law & Elder Rights, and others for advocates to use in their outreach to better serve AAPI clients during a time when we should be celebrating the resiliency and contributions of AAPI older adults.
